Glossary of Mining Terms

Room-and-pillar mining - A method of mining flat-lying ore deposits in which the mined-out area, or rooms, are separated by pillars of approximately the same size. Rotary drill - A machine that drills holes by rotating a rigid, tubular string of drill rods to which is attached a bit.

Major Mines & Projects

Gold generally occurs in native form, often associated with pyrite, carbon and uranium. Pyrite and gold within the reefs display a variety of forms, some obviously indicative of detrital transport within the depositional system and others suggesting crystallisation within the reef itself.

Mining Terms Explained: A to Z | Anglo American

Mineral – a chemical compound, such as copper or iron, formed into crystals by geological processes. Muck – in open pit mining, muck is the ore that has been broken into pieces by explosives. In underground mining, muck is the clearing up that''s done after …

Stoping Mining Methods

 · Cut-and-fill stoping is applicable to the mining of firm ore enclosed within walls, one or both of which are weak and heavy. The deposits may be tabular in form, dipping at angles steeper than the angle of repose of the broken ore (or flatter, if scrapers are employed for moving the ore in the ore passes), or to wide, thick ore bodies or masses.

Rockburst support in shallow-dipping tabular stopes at ...

 · It is useful to compare the shallow dipping orebodies of the South African gold mining industry to steeply dipping vein deposits in which mechanised mining methods such as sublevel open stoping or shrinkage stoping can be adopted. 15 For these mining methods, the dip must be steep enough to exceed the angle of repose of the broken rock. The advantage of these mining methods is …

 · Longitudinal Back, Flat-Back Mining Method Long-Wall StopingmMining Method. After starting an overhand stope the shape in which the back is carried is often of prime importance. In A, Fig. 2, is illustrated the method of carrying a flat or longitudinal back (the term long-wall is used sometimes when the vein lies nearly flat).

1874 – Gold Trails

1874. Come 1874 and the results were pretty much in – NSW had blown it. Over the past few years over £1 million had been invested in reef gold mining in the state with the nett effect of taking it back a decade to a time when the bulk of the productivity of the goldfields was in the hands of small scale miners working with primitive equipment.

Palmer Goldfield Mining Landscape | Environment, land and ...

 · Gold mining commenced in Butcher''s Creek in 1874, with both alluvial mining activity, and reef mining at the King of the Ranges. Unlike most of the Palmer''s reef mines, King of the Ranges was a non-company mine; its individual claimants worked it intermittently for small but steady returns from 1874 until 1903, and again briefly between ...

platinum mining, mining of platinum, platinum, platinum ...

The mining of platinum ores is alike gold mining. The platinum orebody is a thin, tabular reef covering a vast area. This enables a progressive method of mining which includes the drilling of the reef and blasting it to advance the face. It combines the increased use of industralization and trackless-mining methods in steps.

Underground Mining Methods

Mining advances downward along the step room angle. Classic Room-and-Pillar Mining. In classic room-and- pillar mining, only a minimum of development work is required to prepare a flat-bedded deposit for mining. Roadways for ore transport and communication are established inside production stopes. Excavation of roadways can be combined with ore

GOLD FIELDS

Mining has been typically on the BXR in the south from 2 Shaft through to 1 Shaft in the north. At Beatrix 3 Shaft, mining is typically done on reef types associated with a transition from BXR to AAR. To the north of 3 Shaft the VS5 erodes the underlying AAR. The BXR is not developed at 4 Shaft where the principle reef is the KKR.

Gold Mining Reefs and Leads

Gold Mining Reefs and Leads. A gold reef is where the gold is found still deposited in its original rock host. In Ballarat this rock was usually quartz, in what is described as a reef. Alluvial gold was gold that had come loose from its original host, and had been deposited by water action into creeks and rivers.

The Dolgellau gold belt has been subject to renewed interest as a result of the rising gold price over the last few years. The area is characterised by poorly mineralized veins with very local, but extremely rich pockets yielding up to 200 oz/t Au. Stoping

Stoping is the process of extracting the desired ore or other mineral from an underground mine, leaving behind an open space known as a stope. Stoping is used when the country rock is sufficiently strong not to collapse into the stope, although in most cases artificial support is also provided.. The earliest forms of stoping were conducted with hand tools or by fire-setting; later gunpowder ...

 · South Africa''s reef deposits, especially gold and platinum-bearing ore bodies, are narrow and tabular. While legislation dictates a minimum operation height of 800 mm in areas where people work, some of the country''s narrow reef mines have ore bodies with thicknesses of less than 500 mm, which results in ore dilution, as waste ore with zero ...

Creating a grade-thickness long section in Leapfrog

 · One of the most common diagrams you see on stock market releases and on any wall in a mine office is a long section of the ore body. Where suitable this long section will display the ore as a grade * thickness plot, perhaps it is called a gram metre plot, or a gram centimetre plot, a metre ppm plot, perhaps even a metre per cent plot.
